For many travelers in Acadia parish the jump between U.S. Highway 90 and Interstate 10 via Highway 91 is a real time saver. It might mean a few extra minutes of sleep or enough time saved to enjoy a cup of coffee before heading out the door to head to work or school.

That shortcut over Highway 91 remains closed this morning, according the Department of Transportation and Devlopment. The cause of the closure has to do with electrical components of the bridge being affected by the recent high water.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces that due to significant damage sustained during the recent flood event, the Estherwood Pontoon Bridge on La. 91 in Acadia Parish will remain closed to motorists until further notice

That detour route is according to the DOTD is through the city of Crowley via U.S. 90 to Highway 13 to I-10. Motorist in Crowley should expect additional traffic on Highway 13 during this detour phase.

The bridge components are actually in the up position so that river traffic may pass through. The bridge floor itself  rises and lowers based on the level of water in the river. Hence the name the Pontoon Bridge.  DOTD regrets the inconvenience to travelers.
