The warden at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola has told a Baton Rouge television station that he intends to step down from his position at the end of the year. Burl Cain has been the target of an investigation in recent months that he engaged in real estate deals that involved family members and friends of inmates.

The Baton Rouge Advocate had questioned Cain on his involvement in those deals. The paper was also investigating whether Mr. Cain had violated any rules of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections in participating in those alleged deals.

Cain said in the interview with WAFB

And rather than more discredit come out and more embarrassment to the department and even the new administration, it’s just time for me to go,

Cain is the longest serving warden. He has been in charge of the Angola facility since 1995.
