Louisiana law requires anyone born after January 1, 1984, who drives a motorboat that pushes more than 10 horsepower to complete a boater education course administered by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Luckily, you have the opportunity to fulfill that requirement on one of the next two Sundays in Lake Charles.

The law does allow anyone to drive a watercraft of this nature as long as someone on the vessel is either older than the prescribed age or has been certified.

The one-day classes are free, and participants are issued a certification card to operate a vessel.

The course is offered year-round but, with boating season about to peak, it's best to not put it off.
