Chris Stapleton is the latest artist to offer an in-concert cover in honor of the recently deceased Prince. During a stop in Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday night (April 23), the country singer-songwriter performed "Nothing Compares 2 U."

Stapleton closed out his set at Berkeley's Greek Theatre with the cover, telling the crowd, "Hell, I'm gonna try this, not because I can actually do it, but because I'm gonna do it for a great musician that we lost." He and his band were, appropriately, bathed in purple light as they turned the famous, heartache-heavy song into a soulful jam, complete with a short guitar solo by Stapleton. Although Sinead O'Connor made "Nothing Compares 2 U" famous, Prince wrote the song for his side project, the Family. The band's version of the tune appeared on their 1985 self-titled album, but it was never released as a single. O'Connor, however, earned a worldwide hit with her version in 1990; it hit No. 1 in multiple countries and has been certified platinum in the United States.

Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958. He released 29 studio albums throughout his career, won seven Grammys and one Oscar and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He was 57 at the time of his death.

Stapleton is booked for Bonnaroo in June, and he's got quite a few tour dates on his calendar in the coming months. He and Hank Williams Jr. are even teaming up for a co-headlining tour that runs throughout August.
