The threat of rain and possible thunderstorms this weekend has prompted the cancellations of some Christmas parades this weekend.

The Sulphur Kiwanis parade scheduled for Friday (12/2) night is canceled.

The town of Elton and the Coushatta Tribe, who host the parade there, made the decision Thursday not to have their event originally scheduled for Saturday (12/3) at 11AM.

The City of Lake Charles says the street and boat parades, along with the fireworks display on Saturday will be canceled.

However, the indoor activities will continue as scheduled. They are as follows:

  • Santa’s Workshop will take place from 1:00-5:00 p.m. with ages 6-12 in the Civic Center Coliseum and tiny tots in the Exhibition Hall. Kids can enjoy games, prizes, entertainment, train rides and much more.

  • The annual Community Band Christmas Concert will take place in the second floor Mezzanine from 3:00-4:00 p.m. The band will be accompanied by Our Lady Queen of Heaven Youth Choir.

  • The Lighting Ceremony will take place in the Contraband Room (second floor) from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Entertainment will include teen Zydeco artist, Kaleb LeDay, the Barbe High Show Choir, Gumbeaux Gator and The Girl Scouts.  At 6:00 p.m. officials will flip the switch to light the front lawn of the Civic Center.

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is predicting an 80% chance of rain and possibly thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday.
