Country Singers React to Mass Shooting at Sutherland Springs, Texas Church

Country singers were among the many who turned to social media to offer thoughts and prayers after a mass shooting Sunday (Nov. 5) at a church in a small Texas town.

Multiple media outlets report that at least 26 people were killed and 20 or more injured in the mass shooting Sunday morning, according to law enforcement.

The shooter was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a semi-automatic rifle when he arrived at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio, and began his shooting spree Sunday morning. As he left the church, he was confronted by a local resident who was armed. The resident pursued him and fired at him. The shooter was found dead in his vehicle with a gunshot wound after fleeing the scene. It’s unclear whether he was shot by the resident who confronted him, or if he took his own life.

ABC News and other media outlets have identified the shooter as 26-year-old Devin Kelley, a resident of a nearby county. No motive has yet been established for the attack, which claimed victims ranging in age from 5 to 72 years.

The incident is reported to be the worst church shooting in U.S. history.

The shooting spree comes just over a month after the mass shooting that took place at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, which is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. That attack killed 58 people and injured more than 500 others.
