Additional Information

As part of the Dare to be Healthy initiative and in support of the Partnership for a Healthier Southwest Louisiana, on Saturday, May 16, the City of Lake Charles will participate in the City Challenge – Start Walking Calcasieu!

There are two ways participants can get involved. They can go online to take the Pledge to walk and move more—fill out the online pledge at  http://healthierswla.com/dare-to-be-healthy/city-challenge-start-walking-calcasieu/—or go to the May 16 walk.

Participants can register at the walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the south end of the Lake Charles Civic Center Promenade – across from Millennium Park – near the Marina entrance. The “Walk With Your Mayor” will begin at 9 a.m. at the south end of the Promenade, continue northward to the PPG Fountain, and back.

Why join the Challenge and walk? Louisiana currently has one of the highest rates of obesity in the nation at 33.1 percent. Walking has the lowest dropout rate of any exercise and can help in the following ways: manage weight; improve mood and help ease depression; boost your immune system; maintain mental efficiency; strengthen your heart, lungs, and muscles; lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels; prevent osteoporosis; and improve energy and endurance.

Each of the six Calcasieu Parish mayors will host walks in their respective cities and lead efforts to get their community moving. All the cities will be competing to get the most residents to participate in the initiative. The city with the largest participation will be awarded with a traveling prize. The winning city will be determined based on city population/largest percentage of participation in pledges to walk or those who sign in the morning of the walk.

All residents are encouraged to get involved and join in the mission to reshape Calcasieu Parish by moving more, eating healthier and making better choices.
