Additional Information

On Saturday, September 26 (9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.), the National Hurricane Museum & Science Center (NHMSC) in conjunction with Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes and the City of Lake Charles will host its first ever Hurricane Awareness Day.  The event is being held to mark the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Rita and the worst hurricane season in history—the 2005 hurricane season. This family event will be held at the future site of the Museum on the grounds of the Lake Charles Civic Center (900 Lakeshore Drive).  In conjunction with this event, the Southwest Louisiana Emergency Assistance Mutual Aid Association will be hosting an Emergency Responder Appreciation Day (ERAD).

The day will feature dozens of hands-on exhibits, thrilling demonstrations by emergency responders, fun family activities, music and food.  Exhibitions will feature the latest technologies, stage emergency response and rescue techniques, showcase over forty emergency vehicles, and present weather preparedness activities.  The National Weather Service will conduct seminars outlining the events surrounding the 2005 hurricane season and showcasing advances in weather prediction and technology since 2005. The Emmy® award-winning documentary “All Over But to Cry!” (1957 Hurricane Audrey) and the newly released KPLC TV “Life After Rita” documentary will be shown. Kids’ events include reporting weather live, an ERAD Kids Zone, a fire fighter’s challenge race, baby alligator petting, arts and crafts activities and much more. The exhibits open at 9:00 a.m.

In addition to the exhibitions and activities, a 10k, 5k and 1-mile fun run will be held. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. and the race will kick off at 7:30 a.m. Registration is available online at www.nhmsc.com.

As part of ERAD, a memorial service for fallen responders will take place at 9:15 a.m. on the main stage.

A complete schedule of events appears below and can also be accessed by visiting www.nhmsc.com. In case of severe rain and/or lighting/thunderstorms event may be cancelled.
