Cody Stroud threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns to help McNeese State upset South Florida 53-21 on Saturday night.

The Cowboys scored three touchdowns within a five-minute span of the second quarter to take control. It was 40-7 early in the third quarter and would have been worse if USF's Marcus Shaw hadn't broken an 80-yard run for a touchdown on the Bulls' first play from scrimmage.

Stroud threw TD passes of 22 and 78 yards to Nic Jacobs, Dylan Long scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards and Guy Morgan returned an interception 76 yards for a TD.

McNeese State is beginning its eighth season under coach Matt Viator. With 13 Southland Conference championships and 14 FCS Subdivision playoff appearances, the Cowboys not only have a strong tradition but have had success before against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents.

The 53 points were most ever scored against South Florida at home. McNeese also has victories against three members of the Sun Belt Conference -- Louisiana-Monroe (2002), Louisiana-Lafayette (2007) and Middle Tennessee (2012) -- over the past 11 years. They're 4-12 in games against FBS schools since 2000.
