So what exactly is the Presidential Primary all about?  In a primary election, registered voters get to choose the candidate for their party's (democrat or republican) nomination by voting in a general election.

There are two main types of primaries, closed or open, that determine who is eligible to vote in the primary. In a closed primary, registered voters can only vote for the candidate in the party their affiliated with.  In an open primary, a registered voter can vote in either primary no matter what party they belong to.
