November is one fine month to be outdoors in Southwest Louisiana, and you'll have the chance to enjoy it while also raising money to help fight heart disease during the American Heart Association's Heart Walk.  On November 10, the Heart Walk will take over McNeese State University's Quad, and you can help be a part of it.

The AHA is trying to raise $200,000 for this year's event, and as of mid-October, they were only halfway there.  You can help by going to www.swlaheartwalk.org to donate, start a team or to get any other information you need on the event.  Once you've got a team together, the AHA can help you with tips on how to get the most out of fundraising.

The Heart Walk will feature a lot of activities, from a 3-mile walk/run to a jambalaya cookoff to even a T-shirt contest. Registration will kickoff at 8 a.m. and the Opening Ceremonies will commence at 9 a.m. Last year's event brought out 2,500 walkers to support heart-healthy living.

Heart disease is the no. 1 killer of all Americans, while strokes are the no. 3 killer.  The research done by the AHA is crucial to helping heart disease sufferers survive cardiac events and helping doctors better care for those with chronic issues. The money helps to develop breakthrough medical devices and procedures.

The Heart Walk is important, but it's far from somber.  There will be live music, a children's play area, lots of heart-healthy food and a lot of support.  Walking is one of the best (and easiest) things you can do for your heart on a daily basis.  So if you get the chance, join up -- and if you can't make it, please try to make a donation to this worthy cause.
