Coolest. Teacher. Ever.

Barry White Jr. is a fifth grade English teacher at Ashley Park PreK-8 School in Charlotte, NC. He also has super cool personalized handshakes with every single one of his students.

Being a huge Cleveland Cavaliers fan, White noticed LeBron doing custom handshakes with his teammates and wanted to bring that bond to his classroom. Literally—every single student has a different handshake, and what's even cooler is each handshake features moves inspired by the student's personality.

They know when they get to the front door we do our ‘good mornings,’ and then it’s time to go. I’m always pumped up and then we start doing the moves and that brings them excitement and pumps them up for a high-energy class.

It started with a couple of kids, but then soon caught like wildfire.

This year I started making handshakes with the kids at recess. It was just one or two students and then it became contagious. I saw how much it meant to them, so I said, ‘Come on. Everyone come on.’ Then it was my full class, then it was kids from other classes. Now I have 3rd graders wanting to do it too.

As for how White remembers ALL of those handshakes, he credits his muscle memory. He believes that having that deep connection with the kids allows for building relationships that will help them achieve at high levels in the classroom every day.

Hats off to Mr. White for the culture he's building at Ashley Park.
