Trace Adkins is releasing a new album, Something's Going On, and he recently told Taste of Country which songs made him emotional in the recording process.

Adkins says that two tracks titled “Whippoorwills and Freight Trains” and “If Only You Were Lonely" brought him to tears while in the recording studio.

"That very, very rarely ever happens to me, but there were a couple songs on this record that did that to me," Adkins tells us backstage at a music showcase in Nashville to preview the new album.

"That emotion, that deep spot somewhere where it came from and [I] just had to stop and just compose myself...it's really cool when a song moves you like that. You get jaded after 20 years, and you don't think it can happen anymore, but every now and then it still does."

The country star says the project was one he was in no rush to get completed. "We just took our time and did the record we wanted to do," he reflects. "I was just able to put together a collection of songs that are representative of where I've been in my head for the last two or three years. 'Watered Down' is a good example."

Adkins cites "Whippoorwills and Freight Trains," “Gonna Make You Miss Me” and "Something's Going On" as a few of his favorite songs on the new album, calling the title track "a really sexy thing" that he enjoyed recording. "I always have something naughty on my records," he says. Though he admits “Gonna Make You Miss Me” delves into a more pop sound, Adkins says fans won't be surprised when they listen to his new project.

"You got to know what's in your wheelhouse, what you can do and what you can't do. Like Clint Eastwood said, 'A man's got to know his limitations,' and hopefully I know mine," the singer states. "I try to stay close to what I think I should be doing."

Something's Going On is set for release on March 31. The album's first single, "Watered Down," hits country radio on March 13. Adkins recently kicked off a new 2017 tour in support of the album that continues through August.
