Normally, you have to go to a zoo or to Florida if you want to see manatees. But, if you're really lucky, you might be able to just hang out in Westlake and see one.

Or at least, that's what happened to Amanda Whatley earlier this week, according to KPLC. She looked out her window over the Calcasieu River one day, and saw a weird shape floating around in the water. Out came her cell phone, and pretty soon, she had rare footage of a manatee swimming in Calcasieu Parish.

Manatee sightings are pretty rare this far west. KPLC says the last sighting in this area was in Big Lake in 2012. (It was also in November.  Coincidence, or is there something in the river in the fall that they like?)
