Over the many years that I've been a country music fan and in country radio there are a lot of songs that I really  loved. I've picked seven songs that I can remember as making a big impact in my life. You're going to find a lot of different kind of songs in this line-up. From just great country songs, to patriotic and gospel. Some were not million sellers, some were, but they all hold a special place in my heart and my life. I hope you enjoy these.

    The Ragged Old Flag

    Johnny Cash

There was several years that my brother and I announced rodeos across several states and the beginning of each rodeo was started off with a prayer, the National Anthem and a patriotic salute. This was always one of the best parts of the rodeo because the crowds would always respond in a great way, especially when we had the American Flag carried by a cowgirl on horseback with this song played.

    Almost Pursuaded

    David Houston

When I first started working in radio this was the first big hit that I remember as being a monster song. David Houston from Shreveport, La. rode high on the charts with this song and made a living for many years off this one song. The lyrics are very strong.

    Easy Lovin

    Freddie Hart

Easy Lovin is another great country song that stands out in my mind. One reason is that it was the CMA's Country song of the Year for 2 years in a row. In 1971 and 1972. This is also the first country song to have the word "sexy" in the lyrics.

    He Stopped Loving Her Today

    George Jones

Here is another great country song that won the CMA's Song of the Year award 2 years in a row. In 1980 and 1981. I don't know anybody that didn't like this song. A dj normally gets tired of a song after they play it so much, but I can honestly say I never got tired of playing "He stopped loving her today".What a monster hit. We just lost George recently but this song will keep him alive forever.

    Hello Darling

    Conway Twitty

Conway Twitty was a Super Star and  he was introduced on his concert shows as " The best friend a song ever had". When Hello Darling came out it was an instant hit and everybody loved it because I think just about everyone could relate to it. This is another song that I never got tired of playing.

If Jesus Came TO Your House

    Red Sovine

Red Sovine had some bigger hits like Teddy Bear and Phantom 309 but this song always left me standing and thinking about what the words say. Several artists have had versions of this song but I think this is one of the best. I've always been so impressed with the lyrics that my friends The Arenos allowed me to record it and released it on one of their cds.

    Old Rivers

    Walter Brennan

Did you ever listen to a song or have a favorite song that every time you heard it you would break down and cry? Well this is one of those songs for me. In fact when I started putting this post together, I checked this song to make sure it was the one I wanted and sure enough the tears started flowing. Walter Brennan released this song in 1962. He's had several other recitation songs  like Suppertime and The Farmer and the Lord but Old Rivers is the one that really hits hard. Listen and see if you don't agree.
