24 Years Later: Scotty Shares His 9/11 Story
🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — I shared this story last year about where I was at on this day 24 years ago, but I always feel like it’s worth sharing so that we always remember that day. Hopefully this is a day that you all remember as well.
A Sulphur Graduate’s First Job
I graduated in May of 2001. I started working at a Feed Store in Sulphur, Louisiana, just a few weeks after that. I was just getting life started beyond high school. Then came the day that none of us will ever forget, September 11, 2001.
Hearing the Attacks on the Radio
That morning, I remember being in the feed room. We had an old radio. All we had to keep in touch with the outside world was that radio. When the word of the attacks began to come across, I remember being scared, I can remember thinking that is was just a dream. We had no choice but to listen and attempt to interpret it.
The World Trade Centers came first, followed by the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania plane accident. One report after another continued to come in. The entire globe seemed to be under attack as I stood in the feed shop and listened to the radio. I was concerned about what might occur next as well as what had already occurred.
Fear, Confusion, and Unity
I think back on that day sometimes. No matter how much time goes by, it's one of those moments that sticks with you. I remember the people in the room, the looks on our faces and the fear that we all felt.
Lessons That Last a Lifetime
I still think about those memories years later. It's a major factor in my strong desire to give back to the community and work on fundraising events for breast cancer, such as the Boobs Cruise and the Scotty Schadler Gator Hunt. I learned a lot from that day about the value helping others and making sure if you can do something for someone that you should.
