Do you remember? "It was the 3rd of June, another sleepy dusty delta day". Yes, the song was The Ode to Billy Joe and it was a huge hit for Bobbie Gentry back in the 60's on the country and pop charts. They even made a movie about it.

I was working at a little station in Ripley, Mississippi when this song was a big hit. Of coarse I didn't know it was a big hit because this little town was way out in the sticks and we didn't get any charts or anything so we just played what we liked and most of the time it worked. I got Bobbie Gentry's song in the mail a couple of times but felt it was too blues and not really country enough so threw them away. I did get another version of the song by Margie Singleton and it was more country so I started playing it. Well one Friday afternoon, I was on the air and in walks one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Well she comes in with a gentleman and introduces herself as Bobbie Gentry and was passing through going to a big homecoming for her about sixty miles south of Ripley in Houston, Miss. Well, she heard me playing the other version of the song and was wondering why. Busted... I think I lied about never receiving her record, so she gave me a copy and an album and I interviewed her and played Bobbie Gentry and The Ode to Billy Joe.
