KNGT | Lake Charles, LA — Y'all, if you've heard "I'm bored" one more time already this summer, I got some good news for ya.

The Calcasieu Parish Library system is absolutely loaded up with stuff for kids, teens, and even grown folks this week. And honestly, some of these programs sound way cooler than what I was doing when I was a kid. Back then, if Mama wanted us out the house, she'd point at the door and say, "Go find something to do." That was the whole summer plan.

What Programs does the Calcasieu Parish Library have this Week?

Now these kids got dinosaur adventures, slime-making, comic book workshops, video games, and even stuffed animal sleepovers. A stuffed animal sleepover.

One thing that jumped out at me was Diggery's Dino Adventure. That thing is making the rounds all over the parish Monday and Tuesday. They have music, magic, comedy, puzzles, dinosaurs, and a paleontologist named Diggery. So if your kiddo is into Dinosaurs this is your Class!

And speaking of kids burning off some energy, there are Story Times happening all over the parish this week. Sulphur, Moss Bluff, DeQuincy, Iowa, Starks, Hayes, Westlake, Vinton... pretty much everywhere. Those programs are built for the little ones and help get them ready for school while letting parents catch a breath for a minute.

Kids can Also paint garden rocks, make leaf stamps, create tie-dye flower bouquets, design butterfly wings, build flower crowns, and even learn how to draw their own comic books. I would've probably drawn superheroes fighting alligators if somebody gave me that chance when I was ten.

For the teenagers, there's Y2K crafting, Dungeons & Dragons, tabletop role-playing games, video game afternoons, friendship bracelets, and all kinds of creative workshops. Which is nice because keeping teenagers entertained in the summertime can sometimes feel harder than catching fish when they're not biting.

Now don't think the library forgot about us adults. They've got crochet classes, chair yoga, scrapbooking, paper flower crafts, home canning classes with the LSU AgCenter, book sales, book bedazzling, and enough arts and crafts projects to keep Pinterest happy for a month.

One event that sounds really neat is the Port Wonder Library Takeover Day on Thursday. The library is setting up shop at Port Wonder in Downtown Lake Charles with story times and crafts throughout the day. That's a pretty good excuse to get the kids out the house and off the couch for a few hours.

I know summertime can defiantly break the bank. Movies cost money. Water parks cost money. Taking the whole family out to eat can feel like you just financed a new truck. That's why I always like seeing stuff like this. A lot of these library programs are free, they're educational, they're fun, and most importantly they'll keep the kids busy for a little while.

So if you're sitting around this week trying to figure out what to do with the grandkids, the kids, the teenagers, or maybe even yourself, take a look at what your local Calcasieu Parish Library branch has going on.

Trust me, there's a whole lot more happening at the library these days than just checking out books.
