Losing your wallet is one of the most stressful things that can happen. Maybe you left it on the roof of your car while loading groceries and drove off. Maybe it slipped out of your pocket at a restaurant. Or worse, maybe someone stole it from your car when you thought it was locked. No matter how it happens, losing your wallet means losing more than just cash—it means putting your personal information at risk.

If your wallet is packed with important personal and financial data, identity thieves will have a field day. With just your name and Social Security number, they can apply for loans, open new accounts, or even commit fraud in your name. If they also get their hands on a government-issued ID, such as a passport or passport card, they can alter it and use it for even more fraudulent activities.

Almost one-third of Americans have been victims of identity theft. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), there were about 1.1 million reports of identity theft in 2022 alone. Criminals are always looking for ways to get their hands on personal data, and your wallet can be a goldmine for them.
