With just your name and Social Security number, they can apply for loans, open new accounts, or even commit fraud in your name. If they also get their hands on a government-issued ID, such as a passport or passport card, they can alter it and use it for even more fraudulent activities.

Almost one-third of Americans have been victims of identity theft. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), there were about 1.1 million reports of identity theft in 2022 alone.
