The MLB Draft is underway in Seattle, Washington. The Draft began on Sunday and has gone through today and a Southwest Louisiana native received some phenomenal news on Tuesday.

Former Pitkin Tiger Garrett Edwards was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Edwards was a force to be reckoned with both on the hardwood and the baseball diamond while in his High School years at Pitkin.

Garrett Edwards was a member of the 2019 Class B State Championship team at Pitkin High School, the school's first title since 1999. During that magical 2019 championship season, Edwards went 11-1 with 80 strikeouts and a 0.46 ERA.

Edwards also had a prolific basketball career at Pitkin High School finishing with 4,103 points, placing him as the No. 29 scorer in the nation. Edwards talked about the decision to choose baseball over basketball in college, "I remember back to AAU my 10th-grade summer and I did not enjoy it at all, and I felt like that was what college basketball was going to be like. I knew baseball was exactly what I wanted to do and that is why I chose it, and I feel like I made a really good decision."

During his time as an LSU Tiger, Edwards was pretty incredible when he was healthy. Edwards was phenomenal during a shortened 2023 season for the Tigers before he was sidelined with a Torn UCL. Before the injury, Edwards was in the midst of a career year while posting an ERA under 2 in over 23 innings pitched and was truly one of LSU’s best bullpen pieces.
