When you win an award seven times, perhaps it is time to retire your name from the running. Brooks won his seventh CMA Entertainer of the Year Award just last year in 2019. The competition he was against was pretty stout: Eric Church, Keith Urban, Christ Stapleton, and Carrie Underwood. Underwood was the favorite to win the 2019 award.

After Brooks accepted the award, Church was on stage during his show later on and made a remark everyone was sort of thinking at the time. The nominee called out Brooks for the award by changing the lyrics during his show while singing a cover of Waylon Jennings' Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way.

Brooks went Facebook Live to make it official. He explained how the night after receiving the award wasn't that fun. He was even tweeted to about how he should step down from the award in the future. He went on to say how he feels the other artists work extremely hard and it is time for them to have a chance to get it. He focused on trying to reiterate that he didn't want to come across as ungrateful for the award.

On the flip side, Brooks considers seven to be his lucky number. Perhaps it was a good stopping point for the multi-generational country artist to stop at his seventh award for his career and let the others have a chance at it. The Entertainer Award is the only award Brooks is asking the CMA group to remove him from. He still wants to be considered in all of the other categories he can get in.

Brooks is still holding on to his next album that was set to release this summer. The album is named Fun, but he commented on his Facebook page that he just didn't feel right about promoting an album while everyone was struggling. It seems like a good thought. How could you promote an album about having fun when the entire nation and world isn't? We look forward to hearing it soon, hopefully.
