I do it all the time, mostly without even realizing it - tossing something in the trashcan. We all do. All our garbage has to go somewhere, and at the end of the day, it can amount to massive trash at the landfill.

Landfills are important to protect. After all, where else is all the refuse going to go? In Texas, certain items are illegal to toss in the garbage can. According to Texas Disposal Systems, the consequences for doing so can be severe, incurring fines or worse.

Below are items not only illegal to toss in the trash but dangerous for the environment. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is a remarkable entity when it comes to finding out the "do's and don'ts." Knowing what's safe to dispose of and what could get you in trouble is essential.

Motor Oil

Never throw old motor oil in the trash if you do your own oil changes. It's flammable and toxic and may contaminate water and soil. Instead, take your old oil to an automotive shop. They can dispose of it and may even be able to clean and reuse it. The TCEQ also provides a handy guide on recycling these materials.

Tires

It is illegal to throw tires in the trash. The steel belts can puncture landfill liners, contaminating the ground. Car dealers often dispose of unwanted tires for a small price. Also, check for a collection program in your area.

Another big no-no to dump in the trash is various chemicals or Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). This includes gasoline, corrosive cleaners, paint, stains, and varnishes. The TCEQ takes an in-depth look at HHW chemicals and the proper disposal methods.
