James Landreneau Brings Winning Ways to Gumbeaux Gators

Some coaches chase success, while some just hope to find lightning in a bottle. James Landreneau has made winning a way of life. It’s something he has lived, chased, and delivered upon time and time again. Whether it’s the spring at Cowgirl Diamond or his newfound summer gig with the Gumbeaux Gators, he just finds a way.

But for Landreneau, winning has never been about chasing the final result. It starts with belief, preparation, and focusing on the task directly in front of him.

“You have to believe you can win or you have no shot,” Landreneau said. “You can’t be focused on the end. You have to be focused on the now.”

In 10 seasons leading the McNeese softball program, Landreneau has built one of the most successful mid-major programs in the country. He has guided McNeese to seven 40-win seasons, six Southland Conference championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances. The numbers speak for themselves.

This summer, Landreneau found a summer gig. This goal from day one, in true James Landreneau fashion, was to win. He made that abundantly clear from the start. “I was very clear when I committed to this: If I’m going to give up a summer doing this, the expectations are for us to win.”

The Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators are a part of the Texas Collegiate League, and since their inception in 2022, it hasn’t seen many winners in the last few summers. In fact, the Gators were coming off a 9-win season just a year ago. That wasn’t going to cut it for club owners, including new owner Ronnie Rantz.

That’s when they made the call to see if Landreneau would spend a summer coaching baseball, not softball. But it wasn’t just about having a summer gig; it was a chance to coach his son Jaxson, who was also set to play during the summer. That was an easy decision for Landreneau once approved by the bosses at his day job.

No matter if it was building a championship program at Cowgirl Diamond or taking over a summer baseball team searching for a turnaround, Landreneau approaches each challenge the same way: a simple belief that you can win.

“I think just as a competitor, every time you take something on, you have to believe you can win,” Landreneau said.

Summerball can be tricky. The rosters are ever-changing; you have many limitations within pitchers, position players, travel, and so on. It’s not an easy task to win, even for someone like Landreneau who had built a career on winning.

“It has been tough because of the dynamic of the way the league works with so many players in and out, injuries and things of that nature,” Landreneau said. “I think that’s challenging, managing the pitching staff and trying to keep people healthy.”

Even with that, Landreneau made the most of the task at hand and has guided the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators to a Second Half Championship and into the playoffs. After a semifinal win over the Acadiana Cane Cutters, the Gators are off to their first Championship Game appearance in organizaiton history as they'll face the Victoria Generals on Saturday.

Though the Championship is a new spot for the organization, it's a familiar spot for the six-time Southland Conference Champion.

For Landreneau, the winning formula has always remained the same.

“Can we instill some belief? Can we have a very clear vision and standards of how we’re going to do things? And keep it simple.”

Though he is quick to pivot and give the credit to his players and those around him, the turnaround for the Gators has resulted in the first Championship appearance in organization history. That isn’t a coincidence. As I said before, for James Landreneau, winning isn’t just lightning in a bottle; it’s something he has done his entire career, no matter the task at hand.
