The Washington Post dubbed singer-songwriter and eleven-time Grammy nominee Jamey Johnson "one of the greatest country singers of our time." He is among the select handful in country music history to have won two CMA and ACM Song of the Year Awards. His 2008 CD That Lonesome Song achieved a platinum certification for one million copies sold, and his 2010 double album, The Guitar Song, an ambitious project, was certified gold.

He also received two Song of the Year Trophies from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music for the songs "Give It Away" and "In Color."

The native of Alabama published his fifth studio album in 2012 as a memorial to the late songwriter Hank Cochran. He was teamed with Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Ray Price, Elvis Costello, George Strait, Vince Gill, Merle Haggard, and Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran, which is nominated for a Grammy. It was chosen as the best album of the year in 2013 by the Nashville Scene's 13th annual Country Music Critics' Poll.
