UPDATE: Tuesday, 11:52 a.m. -- The shooter is being identified as George D. Lowdins, who has been charged with been charged with attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, resisting an officer by flight and domestic abuse battery.  Lowdins ambushed Benoit from a closet.  Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation.

UPDATE:  1:03 p.m. -- The officer is being identified as Ricky Benoit, and he took a gunshot wound to the neck.

UPDATE:  12:49 p.m. -- Louisiana State Police confirm they have the suspect in custody.  The officer was responding to a domestic disturbance call shortly after 11 a.m. this morning.  The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was airlifted to a Lafayette hospital.

Detectives are interviewing a witness who was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

ORIGINAL POST:  Jennings Police Chief Todd D'Albor confirmed that a Jennings police officer was shot and wounded earlier this morning while on duty.

Early information puts the officer on South Street during the shooting.  Details have not yet been released.
