People are looking to light up the night sky with beautiful colors, but it's always best to be careful. We've got the best DO's and DON'T's for watching and using fireworks this year...

The Fourth of July is almost here, and that means plenty of backyard cookouts, family gatherings, and of course… fireworks. Those are a big part of celebrating. They light up the sky, make big sounds, and bring back that feeling of being a kid again. But every year, people get hurt because fireworks are not handled the right way.

So before you grab those sparklers and start the show, here are a few safety tips to help everyone have a fun and safe holiday.

Fireworks Do's & Don'ts

Only adults should handle fireworks. Kids should watch from a safe distance and never light fireworks themselves.
Keep water nearby. Have a garden hose, bucket of water, or fire extinguisher ready in case something catches fire.
Light fireworks one at a time. Never try to light multiple fireworks together.
Never hold a lit firework. Place fireworks on a flat surface and move away quickly after lighting them.
Don’t relight fireworks that don’t go off. A “dud” firework can still explode. Wait several minutes, then soak it in water before throwing it away.
Stay a safe distance away. Fireworks can travel or explode unexpectedly, so give yourself plenty of space.
Never point fireworks at people, homes, vehicles, or animals. Fireworks should only be aimed into open skies.
Avoid using fireworks near dry grass or trees. Sparks can quickly start a fire.
Don’t use fireworks while drinking alcohol. Stay alert when lighting anything explosive.
Wear eye protection if possible. Safety glasses can help protect against sparks or debris.
Keep pets inside. Loud fireworks can scare animals and cause them to run away.
Follow local laws. Make sure fireworks are allowed where you live and only use approved fireworks.
Dispose of fireworks safely. After they cool, soak used fireworks in water before putting them in the trash.
Never make your own fireworks. Homemade fireworks can be unpredictable and dangerous.
Keep a first aid kit nearby. Just in case someone gets a minor burn or injury.
