Lake Charles Throwback: What Used to Be Here?
Lake Charles, LA [KNGT-FM] - There’s a certain feeling you get when you’ve spent your whole life in one place, a mix of pride, memory, and a quiet sense of time passing. Growing up in Lake Charles, I’ve watched our city evolve in ways that feel both exciting and bittersweet.
Streets I once knew by heart look different now, not because they’re unrecognizable, but because they’ve been layered with new stories built on old foundations. Over the years, Lake Charles has said goodbye to countless bars, restaurants, and entertainment spots that once buzzed with laughter, music, and familiar faces.

Some were weekend traditions. Others were places you only went once or twice, but you still remember exactly where they were and how they felt. Those buildings may still stand, but the memories inside them belong to a different chapter.

Recently, I decided to hop in the car and take a slow drive around town with no destination, just curiosity. As I passed intersections and parking lots, I started playing a game with myself: Do I remember what used to be here?
For example, the picture below is of the old Krogers on 12th Street in Central Lake Charles. Since Kroger shut the doors, this massive building has been sitting abandoned.
I wanted to share just a small sampling of these locations with you because these are a few that stood out the most. So here’s the challenge: take a look, think back, and see how many you remember. Because if you’ve been around Lake Charles long enough, chances are these places were once part of your story, too.
