KNGT | Louisiana — Halloween is here, y'all, and that means it's time for some spooky stories! Now, Louisiana has its fair share of creepy things, but have you ever heard of a monster with razor-sharp teeth, goat legs, and the body of a man that supposedly waits in the tall grass for its next victim? Well, according to an old Louisiana legend, that thing is called The Grunch, and it's said to be hiding somewhere around New Orleans.

Now, I love a good scary story. Especially one that takes place right here in Louisiana. So, I've decided that every week during October, I'm gonna share a creepy Louisiana folklore story with y'all. We've got plenty of strange legends around this state, and some of them will make you think twice before walking outside after dark.

This week, we're heading down toward New Orleans for a story that's been giving folks the creeps for generations. What in the World Is the Grunch? According to OnlyInYourState.com, stories about the Grunch have been floating around the New Orleans area for centuries.

Some versions of the legend claim the creature was being talked about shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Now, picture this thing for a second. It's supposedly about the size of a grown man, has the legs of a goat, and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Nope. I'm good.

I don't know about y'all, but if I'm driving down some dark Louisiana road and see something standing in the ditch with goat legs, I'm not slowing down to ask if it needs a ride. I'm putting that truck in gear and heading home.

The Legend of Grunch Road

Here's where the story gets even creepier. According to the legend, the Grunch would hide in the tall grass near a road outside New Orleans that folks called Grunch Road. The road has reportedly been repaved and renamed over the years, but the stories have stuck around. The creature supposedly waited for people who pulled over or parked along the road.

Now, anybody who grew up in Louisiana knows we have some dark country roads. The kind where there's no streetlight for miles, the trees hang over the road, and you can't see much past your headlights. Throw a monster with goat legs into that situation, and you've got yourself a pretty good reason to stay home. And let's be serious. If something starts moving around in the tall grass at night, I'm not getting out to investigate.

That's how folks end up in scary movies. Did Marie Laveau Create the Grunch? One of the strangest parts of this legend involves a famous name from New Orleans history. Marie Laveau. She was known as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, and her name has been tied to all kinds of mysterious stories over the years. Some versions of the Grunch legend claim that the creature was created by a curse placed by Marie Laveau herself.

Now, there's no proof that the Grunch actually exists or that Marie Laveau had anything to do with it. But that hasn't stopped people from telling the story. And honestly, that's what makes Louisiana folklore so interesting.

You hear a story from somebody's grandpa, who heard it from his grandpa, and before you know it, everybody in the family knows about some creepy creature that supposedly lives down an old road.

Would You Go Looking for the Grunch? Look, I've spent plenty of time outdoors. Hunting, fishing, riding around on back roads, and being out in the woods after dark. I've heard some strange noises out there. Most of the time, it's just an animal moving around. But if I ever hear something walking through the woods and then see a full-grown man with goat legs come out of the bushes, y'all can have that hunting spot. I'm done.

The Grunch is just one of the many creepy legends that have been passed down through Louisiana families for generations. And this is only the beginning of our October spooky stories. I've got more Louisiana monsters and strange folklore coming your way each week until Halloween.

So here's my question for y'all. Have you ever heard of the Grunch? Or do you know another creepy Louisiana legend that I need to look into? Because I've got a feeling there are some stories floating around Southwest Louisiana that might be even scarier than this one.
