Louisiana has almost a billion dollars worth of unclaimed money and property to get back in the hands of its rightful owners. Here's how you can find out if some of it is yours.

You can always check online to see whether or not you have any unclaimed money or property under your name. This usually happens when a business or entity that owes you something can't get in touch with you, so they relinquish the funds or property to the state.

State Treasurer John M. Schroder said in a press release:

We have more than $900 million in Unclaimed Property just waiting to be claimed. The chances are pretty good that you have money in the Louisiana Treasury. This is your money. Claim it!

Schroder went on to say that one in six Louisiana residents will find they have unclaimed money and property with an average value of around $900.

You can search the Louisiana Treasury unclaimed property database by clicking here.

I used the tool while writing this article, and I had one claim in the system that said it was valued around $25 - $50. My dad, on the other hand, had 11 claims he can file to receive unclaimed money owed to him.

When I searched my wife's name, nothing came up, so I decided to do another search under her maiden name. That search showed two claims she can file to receive unclaimed money owed to her.

You can see it's worth giving the search tool a try to see if you or your family members have any unclaimed money or property.
