KNGT | Louisiana — Y'all, I swear summer just started, and somehow we're already back to buying school supplies, filling out paperwork, and making sure the kids have enough snacks to survive the school year. That's pretty much what happened at my house Sunday afternoon. Laura and I were putting together our shopping list when it hit us. "We forgot the snacks."

Now, if you've got kids, you already know this isn't just a quick trip to the store. Picking out snacks is serious business.

My daughter Hannah is in competition gymnastics, and she's also a cheerleader. Let me tell you something, her workout routine would make a grown man cry. Between practices, conditioning, school, and everything else, that kid stays busy.

Apparently, if you are going to be an athlete then you have to make sure you are eating right. According to LouisianaFitKids.com, there are several snacks that make the recommended list for kids. Some of them made perfect sense. Some of them had me completely confused.

Louisiana Healthy Snack List

Under the water and juice category, they listed Apple & Eve Fruitables. No arguments from me there. The fruit and vegetable category was easy enough because, apparently, all fruits made the list.

Then things took a turn. The frozen foods category included Cool Whip. So are we supposed to eat it like ice cream? I'm gonna go ahead a question why that one made the top of the list.

Some Of These Made Me Laugh. The dairy category included Activia Probiotic Yogurt. I reckon we've got to keep everybody running smoothly.

The chips and pretzels category included Baked Flamin' Hot Cheetos. If you are like me, you are thinking how the heck did Flaming Hot Cheetos make it. Well the experts said it so I'm gonna take their word on it.

The breakfast section included Appleways Whole Grain Soft Oatmeal Bars, and the cookies and crackers category included Appleways Whole Grain Blueberry Lemon Crispy Bites. Was I the only one thinking that celery sticks and carrot slices were going to be the goto?. I guess I was wrong.

I know a lot of parents around Southwest Louisiana are getting ready to send the kids back to school. Between football practice, cheerleading, dance lessons, gymnastics, baseball, softball, and everything else these kids have going on, making sure they're eating the right things is important.

Now the hard part, convincing the kids that these snacks are good. And if Hannah finds out Cool Whip is on the approved list, I might be in trouble.
