Louisiana License Plate Laws: Why Some Drivers Oppose Front Plates
People in the wonderful state of Louisiana once noticed that their cars were feeling a little off-balance. You know, cars proudly displayed both front and rear tags in 1915, when Louisiana began issuing license plates. The front plates, however, eventually started to feel like the fifth wheel at a conference for unicycles.
By 1952, Louisiana only required a rear license plate, rejecting front plates. You ask, why? Some claim that this is because Louisianans are efficient and reasoned, "Why bother with two when one will do?" Others think it's because the state's obsession with personalized grille ornaments and bumper stickers keeps getting in the way of front plates.
According to Sema Action Network, Louisiana is still one of the 19 states that just need a rear license plate. In addition to saving the state money, this basic solution relieves locals from having to make holes in the front of their cherished cars. Additionally, it allows vehicle owners to display their Cajun patriotism by creating personalized front plates with everything from crawfish cartoons to fleur-de-lis patterns.
Naturally, efforts have been made to restore the front plate. Lawmakers discussed the proposal in 2024, claiming it may support toll collecting and law enforcement. Many Louisianans, however, objected, believing it would upset the aesthetic harmony of their beloved vehicles. Naturally, efforts have been made to restore the front plate. My truck's got a face only a mother could love, why cover it up with a license plate?
As a result, the front of Louisiana cars continues to be a creative canvas, while the back handles all the heavy lifting of bureaucracy. And thus, one plate at a time, the Pelican State decided to keep things straightforward.
