Walmart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton in Rogers, Arkansas. The company quickly expanded, and by 1970, Walmart became a publicly traded company. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Walmart grew into the largest retailer in the U.S., eventually expanding internationally. Today, Walmart operates thousands of stores worldwide and has become a leader in e-commerce, grocery, and same-day delivery services. Despite its massive growth, the company remains focused on providing affordable products to millions of customers.

ONLINE SHOPPING DOMINATING WORLD

As Walmart expands its fast delivery options, the retail giant is also cracking down on a growing problem.

It is no surprise that in today's day and age people across the country do more shopping online than they would in traditional storefronts. Per a report from The Street, during the 2024 holiday season, Walmart saw a huge increase in online shopping. In its latest earnings report, Walmart revealed that U.S. sales grew by 5% compared to the previous year. One big reason? More customers are using Walmart’s expedited delivery services.

According to the report from The Street, on an earnings call for the company, Walmart’s Chief Financial Officer, John Rainey, said that same-day delivery has played a big role in this growth. The company now reaches 93% of U.S. households with same-day service. Many shoppers are even willing to pay extra for faster deliveries, with more than 30% of orders including a convenience fee for delivery in under one to three hours.

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH WALMART DELIVERY?

With more people using Walmart’s delivery services, the company is making sure its drivers are who they say they are. Per the report from The Street, Walmart is now requiring Spark delivery drivers—the workers who bring online orders to customers—to confirm their identities in person.

This move is Walmart’s latest effort to fight identity fraud. In 2023, Walmart introduced a facial recognition tool in the Spark app to confirm drivers’ identities. However, despite these efforts, over 200 Spark driver accounts were hacked in a phishing attack last year.

So now you may ask, how does this affect shoppers here in Louisiana? With these new rules in place, Louisiana customers may see some short-term effects on delivery times as Walmart verifies its drivers. However, the changes should lead to a more secure and reliable delivery system in the long run.

As Walmart continues to invest in faster and safer deliveries, Louisiana shoppers can expect more convenient options—but also stricter security measures. Stay tuned for more updates on how these changes might impact your online shopping experience!
