As one of country music’s brightest stars, Maren Morris could probably collaborate with just about anyone in the industry. But it was a simple gesture from a fellow Grammy winner, Brandi Carlile, that recently got her attention.

"There was this box on my front porch," Morris tells Taste of Country Nights regarding the special delivery. "I bring it in, and I open it, and it’s this vinyl album of Brandi Carlile."

At the time, the two had not met.

"There was this card that was her stationary, and this typed-out letter to me," Morris continues. "It was just her saying that she was a fan, and she has two daughters that look up to me, and it was just a really old-school, heartfelt thing to do when its not over email or text. She typed a letter out on her stationary and sent it to my house."

The simple, yet so sweet, floored Morris to the point that she began thinking about ways the two could work together. The answer arrived not long after.

"I got the demo for ‘Common’ that night, and I thought, 'This would such an amazing duet with a woman, this song,'" Morris recalls. The song, featuring Carlile, is on Morris' sophomore album, the recently-released Girl.

"Brandi has such an amazing platform, and she has such a strong point of view that I thought it fit the vibe perfectly, and obviously her soul when she sings just matched the instrumentation so much," the "Girl" star says. "We have become friends in the process of this. She kinda opened the door with sending that letter and her record."

In January, Morris joined Carlile at her Girls Just Wanna Weekend destination concert event in Mexico. The two are currently working with Americana singer-songwriter Amanda Shires on a project as the Highwomen.
