In December 2023, McNeese Basketball made ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 when the Cowboys were taking on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. That was the return of Head Coach Will Wade, so the juices were flowing inside of the Legacy Center. The Cowboys were applying some pressure in the full-court press when Shahada Wells intercepted the pass and threw up the allyoop to Christian Shumate who slammed it home. The Cowboys notched the Number 8 play.

Monday Night, the Cowboys traveled to take on the Northwestern State Demons in Natchitoches, Louisiana and the McNeese notched ANOTHER Top 10 play on ESPN's SportsCenter. This time, they notched a Top 5 spot in the segment.

The Bayou Bandits defeated Northwestern State 68-59 on Monday night, and the Cowboys started Southland Conference basketball play with two road victories for the first time in 39 years (1984–1985) and only the second time in school history.

The Cowboys got off to a bit of a slow start in the game but were able to prevail with a 68-59 win.

The Cowboys' victory increased their record to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. They have now won eight straight games, which is the seventh-longest streak in NCAA history. The victory also marked the Cowboys' sixth road victory of the season, the most since they won six games in the 2011–12 campaign, the previous time they had won eight straight games.

Just a few minutes into the 2nd Half the Cowboys held a 6-point advantage over the Demons and that's when Christian Shumate came out of nowhere with another SHU-SLAM! CJ Felder drove to the basket and missed a contested shot, but never failed, Christan Shumate came to the rescue in exhilarating fashion.
