Well, this is just awkward.

Melania Trump appears to have plagiarized a very significant portion of Michelle Obama's speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

All in all, the speech was well received until people on social media collectively began pointing out the striking similarities between the two speeches.

The similarities were first pointed out by journalist Jarrett Hill.

If that isn't enough, this side by side comparison of the speeches is as about as telling as it gets.

Still not convinced? How about this word by word split screen comparison?

Ironically, the plagiarized portion of the speech was related to hard work and honesty.

Now, I'm sure speechwriters in Trump's camp are to blame to a certain extent being that they "worked for the last five to six weeks, honing her speech"—but according to what Melania told NBC's Matt Lauer,

I read once over it and that’s all. Because I wrote it and with [as] little help as possible.

The Trump campaign have released a statement on the similarities between the speeches, but not once did they mention plagiarism.

In writing her beautiful speech, Melania's team of writers took notes on her life's inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking. Melania's immigrant experience and love for America shone through in her speech, which made it such a success

For what it's worth, Trump had this to say about the First Lady's speech back in 2012.

Plagiarism, or just some coincidence where, at one point, 22 out of 26 words seemed to be copied verbatim? Let us know what you think in the comments.
