Montgomery Gentry’s ‘My Town’ Turns 10
After a short-lived chart run with their sophomore effort, Montgomery Gentry made a strong return in 2002 with ‘My Town,’ their third studio album that propelled the duo to country music superstar status.
Released on August 27 of that year, ‘My Town’ was the first record produced by famed Nashville producer Blake Chancey, and was the duo’s first album to feature studio session players and Music Row songwriters that hadn’t appeared on the band’s first two efforts. The album’s simple living title track anthem was released to country radio in May of 2002, and eventually topped out at No. 5. The follow-up track, ‘Speed,’ matched the former’s peak, also topping out at No. 5. The third and final single, ‘Hell Yeah,’ surpassed the album’s first two radio offerings, peaking at No. 4 in late 2003.
Certified platinum (signifying one million copies sold), ‘My Town’ is Montgomery Gentry’s best-selling album to date and is the duo’s first album to produce three consecutive Top 5 singles. The commercial success of the 13-track album fueled the duo’s radio presence going into the release of their fourth studio album, ‘You Do Your Thing,’ which eventually spawned the singing partner’s first No. 1 single.
