A bit of bad news on the Covid front today. State health officials say there have been more than 300 cases of coronavirus cases in fully vaccinated people in Louisiana.  But the experts says this is still a tiny fraction when you consider the total number of vaccines given out in the state. There have been what’s called 367 "breakthrough" cases in people who have completed their vaccine series. You are considered to be fully vaccinated 14 days after getting the 2nd dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or the one dose of Johnson and Johnson.

More than 1.1 million people in the state are fully vaccinated. This number of so-called "breakthrough cases" makes up about .03 percent of those who are fully vaccinated. At the beginning of April, the state reported 170 breakthrough cases. About half of those folks had symptoms. The others were asymptomatic.

The overall case numbers in the state reported on Thursday show a total of 615 new Covid cases in Louisiana on Thursday.

State leaders are still urging residents to get vaccinated and that message is being sent with urgency to young people who have been eager to get back out into bars and social events. The numbers have been climbing in the younger age demographic.
