Iowa Yellow Jackets Crowned State Champions, Defeat North Desoto 50-43
New Orleans, Louisiana (KNGT-FM) - For the first time since 1972, Calcasieu Parish is home to a High School Football State Champion. Friday Afternoon inside the Caesars Superdome, the Iowa Yellow Jackets captured their first State Championship in program history.
In the programs 71 year history, it hasn't all been roses, but Friday the Jackets reached the pinnacle.
As the final seconds ran off the clock Friday night, the Iowa Yellow Jackets celebrated their first-ever state football championship. The wait was finally over for Exit 43.
The story of the night was the running game, and all season long, it has been spearheaded by Senior Running Back J'Vien Adams and Junior RB/DB Kaston Lewis. Adams recently became the program's all-time leading rusher and has been one of the best backs in all of Louisiana Prep Football.
The Yellow Jackets rushed for 405 yards and finished with 588 total yards of offense. Junior Kaston Lewis ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored three two-point conversions. Senior J’Vien Adams added 158 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Senior wide receiver Jeremiah Bushnell was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Bushnell, a University of Houston signee, had a huge night, scoring three touchdowns. He caught four passes for 112 yards and also ran for 44 yards.
With a lot of heartbreak in the Iowa community over the last few months with the passing of Iowa superfan Russell Hardy and Public Address announcer Wayne Dawsey, the Jackets have played for more than just themselves the last few weeks.
The program played 47 seasons without making the playoffs before its first postseason appearance in 2000. Now, 25 years later, Iowa reaches the pinnacle.
