NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Sen. Bill Cassidy says Louisiana will get $437 million of the $500 million in flood recovery assistance allocated by Congress.

Cassidy announced the news in a press release Friday.

Congress approved the $500 million in flood recovery assistance as part of a hybrid spending measure passed in September. But it wasn't clear at the time how much would go to Louisiana and how much would go to other states.

Cassidy described the money as a "down payment" and said the delegation will continue to push for additional aid.

The governor has appointed a recovery task force that will develop plans for how to spend the money.
