The Sounds Coming From The I-10 Bridge Will Scare You [VIDEO]

Lake Charles, LA [KNGT-FM] - If you live in Southwest Louisiana, chances are you have driven over the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge a time or two. But have you ever been underneath it and listened to the sounds coming from the bridge as traffic flows over it?

Well, we did, and let me tell you, those sounds are pretty scary. Should it surprise us, though? We mean the bridge is over seven decades old, has had tons of wrecks, and millions upon millions of vehicles have traveled over it in its lifetime.

Interesting facts about the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles

• Approximately 90,000 vehicles cross the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge daily in Lake Charles, according to recent estimates.

• Before the I-10 bridge, people traveled down Highway 90, and if you wanted to get into Lake Charles, you had to cross the Calcasieu River on a drawbridge near the Port of Lake Charles on Shell Beach Drive.

• The I-10 bridge was built under Louisiana Gov. Earl K. Long's administration

• The actual name of the I-10 bridge is the Louisiana Memorial World War II Bridge, which was named in June of 1951.

• The bridge opened in 1952 for traffic

• The ironwork with crossed guns on the railings is believed to be a reference to Jean Lafitte and the pirates who came to Lake Charles at one time.

The other day, we found ourselves in Westlake, Louisiana, and were sitting under the bridge. We heard this loud sound and looked up and immediately knew it was coming from the I-10 bridge.

What is really scary is when those big 18-wheeler rigs go over the bridge and hit those joists, it makes a really loud metal popping sound. We shot a video of it and have posted it below.
