Louisiana - It feels like we never truly get any sense of autumn and fall here in Southwest Louisiana, and even though it may still feel like summer, the 2026-27 winter season is getting closer. If you're like me, I'm already wondering what kind of winter we could see; there are a few long-range forecasts to look at. Some of them may give us a chillier-than-usual winter...

Will Southwest Louisiana have a cold and wet winter, or will we get another mild one?

What the Farmers' Almanac Says

The Farmers' Almanac has released its forecast for the upcoming winter. Its forecast calls for a winter filled with "snow, sleet and surprises" across parts of the country. For Louisiana and some of the South, the Farmers' Almanac is calling for wetter-than-normal weather. That does not mean Southwest Louisiana is guaranteed to see snow or a major winter storm. It simply means the forecast is pointing toward more precipitation than normal.

Everyone appreciates a little glimmer of hope for some snow every once in a while around these parts.

Here's what they have to say regarding the impact of El Niño:

El Niño is expected to remain an important influence through the heart of the season, favoring wetter-than-normal conditions across much of the southern United States. An active storm track may extend from Southern California and the Desert Southwest through Texas, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast. These areas should watch for frequent storm systems, muddy fields, and occasional surges of cold air.

What Does NOAA Say?

The National Weather Service and NOAA also release long-range weather outlooks. But there is an important difference. These forecasts look at broad weather patterns. They cannot tell us today if Lake Charles will get a snowstorm on a certain day in January. NOAA's seasonal outlooks are also watching a strong El Niño pattern.

El Niño can have a big impact on winter weather across the United States. In general, the southern part of the country can see wetter weather during El Niño winters.

Does This Mean Snow for Lake Charles & Southwest Louisiana?

Anyone who has lived around Lake Charles knows that weather in general is hard to predict, much less SNOW. A long-range forecast cannot tell us whether we will see snow, freezing temperatures, or another winter storm. We could have several cold days and then warm right back up.

For now, think of these forecasts as a rough look at what could be coming, not a guarantee. For Southwest Louisiana, the early outlook is pointing toward a potentially wetter winter. Whether that brings cold temperatures, severe weather, or even a rare snow or ice event is something we'll have to wait and see.
