Teacher Appreciation Week is a great time to say “thank you” to the people who help teach and guide your kids every day. But if you’re not sure what to buy, you’re not alone. Many parents wonder what teachers really want, and what they don’t. Everyone wants to get the perfect gift.

We took a look at what teachers are saying, and the answers were pretty clear.

One of the safest and most popular choices is a gift card. It gives teachers the chance to pick out something they truly need or enjoy. Options like Amazon, local restaurants, or general stores are all solid choices.

A handwritten note is another great idea. Even though it’s simple, it can mean a lot. A short message from a student or parent is personal and memorable.

• Gift cards (Amazon, local restaurants, Target, Walmart)
• Handwritten thank-you notes (from student and/or parent)
• Flowers or a small plant
• Nothing Bundt Cakes (because, DUH)
• Lunch gift cards (especially places nearby or that deliver)
• Favorite snacks or drinks (if you know what they like)
• Classroom Supplies (pens, markers, pencils, etc.)
• Practical items (tote bags, water bottles, umbrellas)
• Fresh & Baked Goods

WHAT *NOT* TO GET YOUR TEACHER FOR TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK:

• Mugs (they already have plenty)
• Candles or heavily scented items
• Lotions, perfumes, or bath sets (too personal)
• Tote Bags, Water Bottles, Umbrellas, etc...
• Random knick-knacks or decorations
• “Best Teacher Ever” themed items
• Coffee gift cards (not everyone drinks coffee)
