The CHRISTUS Ochsner Bariatric Center celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, July 15. The public was invited to take a tour of the new facility, learn more about the services, and meet the medical staff. Two renown doctors  at the center make up the dynamic duo of expert surgeons Dr. Jerome Schrapps M.D. and Dr. Matias Nauts, D.O.

Dr. Schrapps has more than 15 years of experience and performed more than 2,500 successful surgeries in bariatric medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General and Laparoscopic Surgery. He is also the Medical Director of the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Bariatric Center in Beaumont, Texas. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Dr. Schrapps said of the new bariatric center, “I am excited to be a part of this team. I am dedicated to helping patients live happier, longer, and healthier lives by offering resolution through weight loss surgery.”

Dr. Nauts brings 7 years of experience with a specialty in performing robotic procedures. So far, he has more than 1,500 robotic procedures under his belt. Dr. Nauts trains other surgeons to use robotics and explained how this technology has raised the bar in bariatric medicine. He said, “Robotic technologies have revolutionized traditional surgery and are becoming more common in weight loss surgery procedures,” He added. “Robotic surgery only requires a series of small incisions which means less blood loss, less scarring, and a quicker recovery.”

The new CHRISTUS Ochsner Bariatric Center can offer patients seeking surgical treatment for obesity and related conditions a choice to receive premiere care. “Obesity increases risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Bariatric surgery continues to be an effective form of treatment for drastically improving these conditions.” Dr. Schrapps said.

The dynamic duo and their team at CHRISTUS Ochsner Bariatric Center are open and ready to serve the SWLA community. If you are thinking about weight loss surgery, they are committed to helping patients achieve long-term weight loss success.
