The Hidden Messages Behind Louisiana’s Colorful Porch Lights
While passing through Louisiana neighborhoods, you may observe that some residents have porch lights of various colors (especially during the Mardi Gras season). Along the road, you may come across a few other hues, each of which has a distinct meaning. What do they mean, though?
I am aware that not every porch light must have a deeper significance.
For example, it may not come as a surprise to discover a different colored porch light as we approach particular festivals. Around Halloween, you typically see a lot of green or purple, and around Christmas, you see a lot of green and red.
However, some distinct colored porch lights may have a deeper meaning than those seasonal, joyful lights.
Here are six different colored porch lights and what they mean across Louisiana.
Pink - Breast Cancer Awareness
Red - Support for the American Heart Association or Firefighters.
Yellow - Yellow just means you're likely to have less bugs flying around your house.
Green - Besides St. Patrick's Day, green can represent Veterans, Military support, or Lyme Disease Awareness
Blue - Law enforcement support or Autism support.
Purple - Represent domestic violence support.
Not only do various colored porch lights have significance, but you should also keep an eye out for flashing porch lights. An indication that someone inside needs assistance could be a flashing porch light. They can be attempting to alert arriving first responders or indicating distress.
So who come up with the "Color Code"?
To ascertain which colors are appropriate for which reasons, the International Consortium of Porch Light Illuminators convenes twice a year. No, it is untrue. "Just happens" that the various colored lights are connected. Various causes frequently choose specific colors, and porch lighters just follow suit.
Similar to the work done by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), now known as DarkSky International, the "International Consortium of Porch Light Illuminators" is probably a made-up name for a group that promotes the use of porch lights, possibly with a focus on responsible lighting practices to minimize light pollution.
