SWLA Under Tropical Storm Watch as System Develops

Lake Charles, Louisiana - Parts of Southwest Louisiana are now under a Tropical Storm Watch as a weather system near Texas is trying to intensify into a storm. Tuesday Morning, the National Hurricane Center started issuing advisories for Potential Tropical Cyclone One (formerly Invest 90L).

As of Tuesday Morning, the National Hurricane Center says the system has a 60% chance of becoming a tropical depression or tropical storm. The watch covers areas from Sargent, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana. Forecasters say tropical storm conditions could be possible within the next 24 to 36 hours.

According to KPLC Meteorologist Jacob Durham, the main question is where the center of the system tracks. That path will determine where the heaviest rain falls.

Durham says the system will likely be a very uneven storm, with wind shear pushing many of the showers and storms east of the center. While the system could become a named storm, it is not expected to become very strong.

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles says a very active weather pattern will continue, with showers and thunderstorms expected across the area. A stalled front, combined with the tropical system, could bring several days of heavy rainfall.

Forecasters say parts of Southwest Louisiana could see 3 to 6 inches of rain, with some areas possibly receiving more than 10 inches.
