If you live in Louisiana and have an old iPhone lying around, you might be sitting on a goldmine! While everyone is excited about the newest iPhone models available for preorder, it’s some of the older models that could make you a lot of money.

Many Gen Xers and Millennials are feeling nostalgic about the technology they grew up with, and that includes the very first iPhones. Collectors are paying huge sums for these vintage devices, especially if they’re still in their original packaging.

The most valuable iPhones are the very first models, which were released back in 2007. Collectors are especially interested in the original 4 GB and 8 GB versions. The 4 GB model is the most sought-after because it was discontinued shortly after Apple released the 8 GB version. The 8 GB model is also valuable, especially if it’s the earlier version without the iTunes logo on the box.

If you have one of these old iPhones, keep it in great condition. Collectors are looking for phones that are still sealed in their original packaging. If the box has been opened, it might still be worth a few thousand dollars, but it needs to be in mint condition.

Bobby Eaton, who works with RR Auctions in New Hampshire, explains that the value of old iPhones is soaring. “The rarity, scarcity, and the collectability of these pieces is becoming nostalgic for people in their 40s and 50s,” Eaton told Nexstar. For example, a first-generation iPhone sold for over $147,000 in March, and another rare one went for a record $190,373 last year in Louisiana!

Other early Apple products, like the first iPods and iPads, are also worth a lot if they’re in great shape and preferably sealed. But don’t get too excited if you have a different brand of phone, like a Samsung or Android. They don’t have the same value in the collector’s market as iPhones do.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY DEVICE IS WORTH MONEY?

To find out if your old iPhone is valuable, start by checking the serial numbers and IMEI numbers on the box to ensure it’s never been activated. Some people try to pass off used phones as new by shrink-wrapping them, so make sure your phone is genuinely unopened. You can also contact auction houses that specialize in vintage technology to get their opinion or even get your phone graded.

If you have an old iPhone, now is a great time to see if it’s worth something. While it’s hard to predict exactly how much collectors will pay in the future, the current market shows that rare, unopened iPhones have substantial value.
