Blake Shelton Drops Brand-New Single, ‘I’ll Name the Dogs’ [WATCH]
"I'll Name the Dogs" is the first glimpse of new music from Shelton since his 2016 album If I'm Honest. Sonically, the song is straightforward, mid-tempo country; in this love song, "You name the babies, and I'll name the dogs" is the narrator's way of telling his love that he's ready to settle down.
"Girl, it’s high time I tell ya / No more messing around ... I’m talking you and me with the same street name / Same last name, same everything," Shelton sings in the first verse of "I'll Name the Dogs." In the chorus, he continues, "You find the spot and I’ll find the money / You be the pretty and I’ll be the funny / You plant the flowers, I’ll plant the kisses / Baby let’s get right down to business ..."
In the "I'll Name the Dogs" music video, Shelton is the singer in a wedding band. Throughout the clip, viewers are led to believe it's a younger couple who's about to tie the knot, but when the bride and groom meet at the altar, it's not those two (and, no, it's not the dogs, either). Shelton's girlfriend Gwen Stefani's two oldest children, Kingston and Zuma, make a brief appearance in the clip, at around the one-minute mark.
"“I’ll Name the Dogs" is a bit of a throwback song for me,” Shelton says in a press release. “It’s traditional country with fiddle and steel, and I’ve got Jimmy Olander from Diamond Rio playing the guitar solo. It brings the sound back a little more traditional for a minute, which I felt like needed to happen musically for me.”
Shelton will be back in his judge's chair for the 13th season of The Voice later in September. On Sept. 12, he's also co-hosting the Nashville portion of the Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief concert.
