Governor Edwards Requests Waivers for Education Laws
Louisiana's schools are closed until at least mid-April. There is a possibility that because of the coronavirus threat that closure could be extended to actually cancel classes for the remainder of the school year. This possibility could create quite a few problems for Louisiana students and their families.
Governor John Bel Edwards has contacted the state's education community about his plans to ask for waivers of certain education laws. Among the things that will be waived, pending federal approval if necessary, are all student attendance requirements and all teacher workday requirements.
The Governor has asked that all LEAP and end-of-course testing be waived as well as all school and district accountability evaluations, as well as state-ordered teacher evaluations.
Let's hope our actions against the coronavirus threat will help minimize the effects the disease has on our state. Hopefully, all students will be returning to the classroom in the next few weeks and important events like graduation can be salvaged from what will likely go down as one of the strangest school years in Louisiana history.
