Tropical Trouble: Gulf and Atlantic Showing Signs of Development

(KMDL-FM) Interests along the northern Gulf Coast and the Southeastern Coast of the United States are on notice. The National Hurricane Center has identified an area of disturbed weather that could affect those who live, work, and have vacations planned in that part of the country.

Hurricane Center Monitoring Two Areas for Potential Development This Weekend

Meanwhile, further to the south and east, just off the African coast, another area of tropical concern is being monitored for tropical development as well. These are the first two weather systems the National Hurricane Center has issued advisories on since Tropical Storm Arthur, the current season's only named storm, made landfall.

As of now, the forecast for both weather systems is bleak at best. The system off the African Coast near the Cabo Verde Islands is only given a 10% chance of strengthening over the next five days. Forecasters say that over the weekend this weather system will encounter atmospheric conditions that are not conducive for further development.

What is the Tropical Threat to Louisiana From These Systems?

The system that is affecting the northern Gulf Coast and the Southeast Coast of the United States is associated with the weather maker that rolled through Louisiana on Monday and Tuesday.  Forecasters say an area of low pressure is expected to form either in the Big Bend of Florida, over the Florida Peninsula, or just off the southeast coast of Georgia in the coming days.

Should that low-pressure system form as expected, conditions would be favorable for very slow strengthening. As of now, the prognosis calls for a 20% probability of the system getting better organized and growing stronger.

Neither of these systems is expected to create issues for Louisiana or the upper Texas Coast. The biggest weather issue our part of the world will face over the next several days is heat. We can expect afternoon temperatures to reach into the lower and middle 90s with heat indices exceeding 105 to 110 degrees in the afternoon hours.
