Flood conditions have led to a second day off of school for Jeff Davis Parish students on Friday, Jan. 11, and along the eastern edge of the parish, flood conditions may necessitate evacuations along the Mermentau River.

Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Ivy Woods said the National Weather Service is calling for the river to rise to 8.5 feet near Castex Landing -- four feet above flood stage.  The river hasn't gotten that high since 2004.  The highway leading to Castex will be under four feet of water "sometime this weekend."

Sheriff Woods wants residents along the Mermentau River to prepare for expected flooding and evacuate if necessary. Sheriff Woods also advises that the Catfish Point Locks are open and draining but that flooding is still expected to be substantial in lower lying areas.
